Enjoy getting prompts? Check out what else The Write Brain offers!
Today’s prompt is a writing exercise from The Writing Cooperative:
“Page Number, Line Number, Start
You can use this as a warm-up writing prompt before you start the day’s work, or as a way to write a completely new story. The instructions are simple: First, pick a random book off your shelf (preferably fiction, though I’m sure you could do something creative with a non-fiction book also). Check to see what the last page number is, then pick any number between the first and last page number. Once you find your page, then choose a number between 1–5 and find the sentence that corresponds with that number (ie. number 2 would be the second sentence). Use that sentence as the first sentence of your prompt and write for ten minutes (or the time frame of your choosing).”
This exercise is especially great if you struggle with getting into the writing mood!
Get creative with your book choice. Would you choose a fiction or nonfiction book? What would this exercise look like if you used a news article or essay as the subject matter instead of a book?
Feel inspired by the exercise and publish your response? Post the link in the comments!
